Missing-Key Vehicle Transport

Shipping a Car Without Keys

A missing key does not automatically make every vehicle impossible to ship, but it can turn an otherwise normal pickup into an inoperable loading problem. Modern vehicles may need a key or electronic access to unlock steering, release a parking brake, select neutral or activate a manufacturer transport mode.

Key Planning Points

Disclose missing keys before the carrier is assigned.
Confirm whether the vehicle is unlocked and whether steering, neutral and parking-brake release are available without the key.
Electronic and EV transport procedures can require key detection or low-voltage power.
Do not assume a carrier can bypass an immobilizer or drag a locked vehicle onto a trailer.
A replacement key or facility-specific loading solution may be the safest path when the vehicle cannot roll normally.

Why the key can matter even when the engine does not need to run

The physical loading question is whether the vehicle can be safely positioned. Depending on the vehicle, the key/fob may control steering lock, gear selection, electronic parking brake release, ignition/accessory power or a manufacturer transport mode. Provide the exact year/make/model because the procedure is not universal.

Missing-key checklist

If any answer is unknown, tell Phoenix that it is unknown rather than marking the vehicle as normally operable.

Modern EV example: key detection can be part of transport mode

Tesla’s current Model Y transporter instructions are one example of why missing-key status matters: Tow Mode is used for controlled winching/repositioning and the vehicle must detect a key, with low-voltage power also required for the normal touchscreen procedure. That is a Tesla-specific example—not a universal rule for all EVs.

Auction and salvage pickups without keys

Auction or salvage listings can be missing keys, but the facility’s release and loading rules still control the handoff. Confirm whether the yard will position the vehicle, whether that help is available for the actual condition and whether the assigned carrier equipment can accept it. Do not assume facility loading assistance.

What Phoenix needs before dispatch

Phoenix can then coordinate the customer information into the authorized brokerage/carrier-assignment process without representing that any particular carrier can load the vehicle until equipment fit is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a carrier ship a car with no keys?

Sometimes, but only when the vehicle can be safely loaded with the available equipment and its steering/neutral/parking-brake condition is understood. Missing keys should be disclosed before dispatch.

Can the driver just drag the vehicle onto the trailer?

That should not be assumed. Locked wheels, steering or parking brakes can require different equipment and can create damage risk.

Should I get a replacement key before shipping?

If a replacement key can restore normal steering, neutral or brake release, it may simplify the shipment. The best choice depends on timing, vehicle design and pickup location.
